Catching Up

The last few weeks have been very busy for me. I photographed several different events, including High School Musical 2 at the Sherman Theater and some more Lehigh Valley Baseball Academy baseball games. I also led a Photo Walk here in Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg as part of Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk. I presented “How I Photograph the Pennsylvania Elk” for the Pocono Photo Club. And I just finished framing 12 photographs for my photo display which will hang at the NEPA Credit Union in August and September.

So, now I am busy catching up with some lose ends, mainly working to post some photos on my website. Yes, life has been busy, but good. I keep learning some new things just about every day, too. I have also made some new acquaintances and friendships. To me, this is one of the best parts–making new friends and enjoying photography with colleagues and fellow photographers.

There is plenty for me to catch up on here with my website. I will be sorting through hundreds of photos and then posting them to my gallery. It will take some time to do this since I am so picky, but I find it an enjoyable task. Seeing the photographs after a shoot is always a lot of fun!

How I Photograph the Pennsylvania Elk

Tonight I was privileged to give a presentation at the Pocono Photo Club. My title was “How I Photograph the Pennsylvania Elk.” It was a wonderful time for me to share how I find and photograph the elk of PA. Some people aren’t even aware that is an elk herd here in our state.

I am fortunate to have a camp in the midst of the elk range and we often have elk in our yard! I thoroughly enjoy getting out to photograph the elk in their natural habitat. My good friend, Dick McCreight, and I lead photo trips called the “Pennsylvania Elk Photography Experience.” These photo trips include meals and lodging, 3 photo workshops, and plenty of opportunities to get out and photograph the elk in all their beauty. It is a great experience; hence the name!

Tonight I shared some of my photographs of the elk and how I go about photographing the elk. It is a passion for me and I always enjoy sharing this photo passion with others. You can find out more about our PA elk photo trips here.

I want to thank the Pocono Photo Club for giving me the opportunity to share my photo passion.

Photo Display

I am gearing up and getting ready for my first official photo display. The photos  will be hung on August 1st and will be on display for two months. This is an exciting opportunity for me to share some of my photographic work with others in a public setting. I have Bill Weitzman to thank for this. Thank you very much Bill!

The process of printing larger photos, 11×14 in this case, and framing them is a good project. I like the look and feel of these larger photos and once assembled in the frames, they look great!

Narrowing down the final number of photographs to 12 was not easy for me. I did settle on a display topic of “wildlife” in a general sense, so the photos include the Pennsylvania Elk, Birds of Chincoteague, and a Pocono Deer.

I have displayed my photos on my website, but having them appear in a gallery is an exciting new venture for me. I hope others enjoy my work!

Flickr

I heard about Flickr awhile ago. Other social network media took priority for me and I paid little attention to Flickr. I concentrated mostly on Facebook and really enjoy this way of reaching out to others.

This changed last night. Following our Photo Walk when we were sitting down and talking with one another at Dansbury Depot, the suggestion was raised to create a Flickr page so we could post and share our photos with each other. I like the idea and decided to give it a try. Besides, the others made it sound pretty easy.

So today I created my Flickr profile and was off and running… well walking maybe. It took me a little while but it seemed to work and I actually understood most all of the steps. Then I discovered how to create a group so the participants could post their photos. And guess what? It actually worked!

You can see this Flickr group here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1151175@N20/

Check it out and let us know what you think about the photographs. Are you on Flickr? If not, considering doing so. I can speak from experience that it is not difficult to do and there are many benefits. Hello, Flickr!

Photo Walk a Resounding Success

A big “Thank you” to everyone who participated in tonight’s photo walk. We had beautiful weather, got to take some amazing photographs, and met some really cool fellow photographers. By all counts, everyone had a very enjoyable evening.

Participants started gathering around 5:30 pm in anticipation of the big event and the crowd slowly started to build. Route descriptions and maps were handed out and then we took a group photograph. And with that the photo walk started!

I enjoyed seeing photographers use their creativity in framing shots along the way and I definitely enjoyed the many conversations, too. It was refreshing to witness the camaraderie among the group and I saw a lot of smiling faces. I even followed the eyes or lenses of some photographers to subjects I may have never seen on my own. I also learned and re-learned some photo tips. It was refreshing!

Right at 8 o’clock we began to gather at Dansbury Depot and many of the walkers joined us for a bite to eat or just enjoy the ongoing conversation. It was a great group and I enjoyed talking with each and every participant. It was great!

I want to thank each one of you for participating in tonight’s Photo Walk. I thoroughly enjoyed being your leader and I am very much looking forward to our next Photo Walk!

Gearing Up for the Photo Walk

Tomorrow night at 6pm the Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg Photo Walk will begin. I am looking forward to it very much and I hope you are, too. We currently have 42 people signed up for the walk. I never could have hoped for such an overwhelming response.

The weather may be a little shaky with the possibility of rain, but this will not dampen our spirits. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a rain jacket just in case. We will have the opportunity to photograph a variety of subjects during our walk and make new photography friends in the process.

For those of you new to this concept, a photo walk is a chance for fellow photographers  to get together and take a walk while photographing what they see along the way. They also get to compare notes, tips and other photo suggestions.

There is still room for 8 more participants, so join us if you can!

Time to Get Organized

Is your office clean or messy? How about your desk?

Are your flash cards empty and ready to be filled or do you have images on them and wonder if you uploaded them to your pc or not?

I have several projects in the wings. Life is busy, but good busy. I am slowly learning how to keep track of projects to see them through. This is helpful in my professional life but also my life here at home, too. Write it down! This is the strong suggestion of David Allen of “Getting Things Done.” He says that we should write things down to clear our mind to stop worrying about everything and be open to creativity.

Sometimes my mind is going 100 miles per hour, worrying about this project and that detail and this phone all I have to return. When we write things down we can allow our mind to stop trying to remember all these details and be open to more creative purposes.

Of course, the trick is to have a system where you regularly re-visit the places where you wrote things down. It does no good to write something down but then forget where you put that piece of paper.

I am learning how to use Outlook and spreadsheets to help store these important pieces of information. Admittedly, I am still learning how to make this work but I am committed to seeing it through so I can be more efficient and keep projects on track.

What about you? Are you seeing projects through to completion or is your mind filled all kinds of details, tasks, and dates not to forget? Stop it! Clear your mind by writing these details down somewhere. And then re-visit the places you parked that information so you can keep on track.

It’s time to get organized!

High School Musical 2

Tonight I attended the dress rehearsal for High School Musical 2 at the Sherman Theater. It was awesome!

All the hard work and dedication of the actors and crew is going to pay off big time this weekend. If you have a chance to attend one of these performances, I strongly urge you to be there. You can order tickets online at the Sherman Theater’s home page.

Photographing a musical dress rehearsal is not easy and present a number of challenges. The lighting is great at spots and lousy elsewhere, at least for photography. I finally settled in on using manual mode and shot in RAW. I will be going through these photos tomorrow and hope to have them posted on my website in another day or two.

I just hope my photos are half as good as the performance by the actors. This is one awesome production!

A Sad Day

This morning I received news that a dear friend of mine lost his battle with cancer. Jim was a very good friend to me. He supported me in a variety of ways and took me on many memorable fishing trips. I have many precious and fond memories of times spent with Jim.

The sad part isn’t only that he lost his battle with cancer and left us, but I do not have any photos of those great times spent with Jim. I was extremely saddened when I heard this news this morning. I know it is selfish on my part, but I sure wish I had some photographs to keep the memories fresh. Like the time we first went fishing together and caught over 60 whiting. Or the time we went on a 2-day trip from Gloucester, Massachusetts and caught so many cod that we had to buy two more coolers. I know these might just sound like fish stories to you, but they are true. I can close my eyes and see Jim fishing beside me and then laughing as he out-fished me.

So the next time you debate leaving your camera at home, don’t do it. Take it along and use it. Some day later you’ll be glad you did. Today is a sad day for me.

Jim, thank you for the many memories that you shared with me. I will never ever forget you!

Getting Things Done

Years ago I learned the Franklin Planner system of accomplishing tasks. I watched the 8-hour video and learned a lot about how to accomplish tasks in a timely manner. This process actually transformed they way I did business on a daily basis. For the next  year I used the Franklin Planner notebook but then in the following year I switched to using an electronic version on an HP Palmtop. My boss was reluctant about me using this electronic version, but it proved to work exceedingly well.

Now, some 16 years later, a lot has changed. Email has become part of our daily routine, voice mail in-boxes are filling up quickly, and computers are standard issue in just about every business. The bottom line is that our workflow has changed quite a bit.

So, today I was listening to a podcast entitled “The Camera Dojo” and the topic was “Tools to Help Manage Tasks and Productivity.” It was enlightening to say the least.

The one tip that I took to heart was how to manage the flood of email messages many of us receive on a daily basis. My email in-box had over 6,800 messages this morning. The idea that was so helpful was to sort through each email and give it a home–move it to a specific folder, trash it, or put it in an @Action folder. This last option was the one that intrigued me the most. I used to keep email messages in my in-box that need a response or action from me. This idea of creating a new folder for emails that need action was just what I needed. The idea of putting the @ symbol in front of the folder’s name puts it on top of the folder hierarchy and constantly in front of me. I took this great idea to heart and while I still have some work to do, my in-box only has 29 messages in it!

What are you doing to get things done?
