My son and I came across this porcupine several years ago. I don’t know what it is about this prickly animals, but I like them!
This particular image is not one of my all-time favorites, but it was good enough to make into iStockPhoto and it has sold several times. I guess that proves I don’t always have the best eye for such things. We actually photographed this porky for quite a while until he grew tired of all the attention and climbed up a tree. It was lots of fun to chronicle this sighting with our cameras. We had plenty to talk about for several days after this encounter!
If you look closely, you will see that the hole in this tree was created by a shovel head that is the back side of this tree. This created a nice place of protection for the porcupine.
These creatures might be prickly but I think they are cute!
Bob, I agree the porcupine is a cute animal but they can do some damage if you get too close, as I’m sure you know. I remember being in my vet’s office some years ago with our first boxer, Cassius. A lady brought her dog in and his face was full of porcupine quills. I felt so bad for him! It’s best to keep your distance from porcupines but I do love seeing them!

Yes, I do know about the dangerous quills on a porcupine. I wonder which is worse — porcupine quills or getting sprayed by a skunk!?! One certainly hurts and is painful. The other is brutal in its own way but lingers for quite a long, long time!
Yes, skunks are brutal to say the least! We had a skunk in our yard and very reluctant to leave. Our dog was on his run in the woods and boy he got sprayed and bad! Poor boy had it in his eyes even. That was a long night! Haven’t had one since thank goodness!
